This was another of the shows I was able to catch when I visited NYC in October. This show is all Bob Dylan songs, with a story long tying the songs together. It had a basic set, but the various characters really brought it all to life.
It was set at a bed-&-breakfast that was barely making ends meet. But they did what they could to help out their boarders & any other wary travelers that came by. There was a love story, a family feud, a murder, & tragedy that all struck this place. It felt like a collection of folk stories to go along with the folk songs. The actors would pull out instruments & microphones to use onstage, & there was typically a divide between a scene ending & a song beginning.
What I really enjoyed, & what struck me the most, was that most all of these actors had a very unique sounding voice. Where they might not always fit in to the regular musicals that are done, they worked perfectly together in this. I honestly did not know any of the Bob Dylan songs they sang (however I only know one Bob Dylan song), but I still enjoyed the music & the show.
I liked it more than Caroline, Or Change, but it still didn't flow as well as I would've liked. It was another great show to see once, but I probably wouldn't ever revisit it. Time to roll like a rolling stone.
